Reproduction of an installation from the series Life Begins in Darkness, created as part of my Master’s diploma in Art Mediation at the Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław.
A two-and-a-half-minute video of a face is projected onto a wall. However, directly in the projection path lies the orbit of a disco ball mounted on a vinyl turntable, which rhythmically refracts the light beam onto an adjacent wall. Driven by the fast rotation, the image disperses, leaving only a spot of light visible in the reflection. We only know it contains a face because we can see it in the unobstructed projection; at times, we can merely discern the outline of a silhouette without clear features.
Only when the turntable is turned off—and if the disco ball happens to rest in the projector’s path—do we begin to see a multiplication of the face from the video. Some of these faces are distorted by the angle at which the light hits the wall, yet the identity remains recognizable.
If viewers choose to watch the full two and a half minutes of the video, they will notice the subject faintly smiling in the final seconds.
